Incident Details
The tourists, who are sponsors of several non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in Uganda, including Arlington Academy of Hope Uganda (AAH) and Reach for Uganda, were traveling from Sipi Falls to Murchison Falls National Park for a holiday. While passing Bukedea Comprehensive School, Mr. Richard Dick Burk, the president of one of the NGOs, requested the driver to slow down so his colleagues could see the school attended by some of the organization’s beneficiaries.
Detention and Clarification
Upon taking pictures of the school, the group was detained, raising concerns about the reasons behind their actions. The tourists clarified that their intention was purely to view and capture images of the school their supported students attend, not to engage in any unlawful activities.
Release and Aftermath
After nearly three hours, the tourists and their driver were released without any charges. The incident highlights the need for clear communication and understanding, especially involving visitors who contribute to local educational initiatives.
