Kampala, Uganda — The Ministry of Internal Affairs has announced that it will destroy more than 60,000 uncollected passports at the Kyambogo centre if they are not claimed by the end of the month.
Reasons for Destruction
Mr. Simon Mundeyi, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Internal Affairs, explained that the accumulation of uncollected passports has become unsustainable due to space limitations at the Kyambogo centre. The Directorate of Citizenship and Immigration Control (DCIC) noted that most of these passports were intended for individuals planning to seek employment as maids, drivers, and security guards in the Middle East. However, many of these individuals have since changed their minds, often due to fear or advice against taking such jobs.
“We have run out of space to store these uncollected passports,” stated Mundeyi. The ministry urges all passport applicants to collect their documents promptly to avoid the inconvenience of reapplying after destruction.
Collection Deadline
The ministry has set a firm deadline for the end of the month for the collection of these passports. Owners who fail to retrieve their passports by this deadline will have to undergo the application process again if they need a passport in the future.
